The resource decision | A question to investigate

Single-use or reusable needs a fair boundary

The choice between disposable and reusable processing equipment cannot be settled by counting plastic alone. Cleaning, sterilisation, utilities, product changeovers and supply reliability all affect the result. Resource Economics asks which arrangement fits a particular manufacturing duty and what would make the preferred option change.

Several incentives meet at the equipment choice

A biologics team may value flexible changeovers while facilities must plan water and heat demand. Procurement worries about consumable supply, and quality needs control of the product-contact system. A proposed NEUVIOR study would compare a specific operation at a defined demand, supported by relevant manufacturing specialists. It would not use a generic claim that either disposable or reusable equipment is always the more responsible choice.

Count the full service

For a reusable option, include manufacture and useful life of equipment where data permit, cleaning, sterilisation, monitoring and maintenance. For a single-use option, include consumable manufacture, packaging, transport, preparation and disposal. Both sides need the same accepted product output and relevant operating conditions. Record failed assemblies, repeated cleaning and rejected batches separately. The comparison should show how many uses or campaigns are assumed, rather than hiding asset life in a footnote.

Quality changes the practical balance

Product-contact materials, integrity, handling and contamination controls can determine whether an option is feasible. A consumable shortage can disrupt a flexible production plan; an inflexible reusable train can create a different constraint. The proposed study would consider these mechanisms alongside resource demand. Applicable GMP expectations and specialist material evidence remain essential (European Commission, n.d.). An environmental model cannot substitute for a suitable manufacturing and quality assessment.

A material can leave one ledger and enter another. Expand the view to see what a manufacturing decision still needs to account for.

Boundary context: ACS (2014) and EMA (2026). Study framing is NEUVIOR’s proposed approach.

A bounded decision study

Request equipment and consumable specifications, campaign schedules, cleaning recipes, utility records, failure history and disposal arrangements. Compare low, expected and high utilisation using the same boundary. Identify supplier data that are verified, estimated or unavailable. The proposed output is a transparent option model and a targeted qualification question list. Any physical evaluation would be a separate agreed activity, with responsible technical owners and an appropriate protocol.

Avoid a winner created by assumptions

Report capital, consumable cost, cleaning effort, capacity and supply exposure separately. State water, energy, waste mass and any lifecycle estimates without merging them into an unexplained score. A reusable system used infrequently and the same system used intensively are different commercial cases. Sensitivity to asset life, campaign length, electricity assumptions and disposal route should be visible, so a buyer understands when the preferred option could reverse.

A clear threshold for further work

Stop if product-contact suitability is unresolved, critical supplier information is missing or the comparison relies on unequal service requirements. Where uncertainty is too large to identify a preferred option, the recommendation should be specific measurement or supplier evidence, not a forced ranking. A bounded paid study can create a stronger procurement discussion and an honest next experiment. It does not establish the performance of equipment that has not been qualified for the intended duty.

The brief for the next investment decision

The proposed decision brief would show the utilisation conditions at which each arrangement becomes attractive, alongside its principal quality and supply dependencies. Manufacturing would own the campaign plan, facilities would verify reusable-system utility demand and procurement would assess consumable continuity. Quality would identify the product-contact evidence required before an option is feasible. A later trial would need equal service requirements and a consistent output measure. The buyer could then distinguish a suitable platform for its actual production mix from an apparently favourable comparison built around someone else's operating pattern.
