The resource decision | A question to investigate

Find the use for the heat before buying the exchanger

Waste heat has value when a real demand can use it at the right temperature and time. A thermal map becomes commercially useful when it connects those conditions with practical integration, controls and maintenance. Resource Economics asks which heat connection deserves investigation, and which attractive-looking connection should be left alone.

A decision for engineering and finance

A plant engineer may know where heat leaves the site but lack a reliable picture of where it could return. Finance needs a dependable operating case rather than a maximum theoretical recovery. Production needs temperatures and availability protected. A proposed NEUVIOR study would select one heat source and a credible sink, then compare recovery with the existing arrangement and a simpler efficiency improvement. The government’s Industrial Heat Recovery Support programme is closed, with case studies retained on its publication page (BEIS, 2018). Those historical examples provide context rather than a current funding offer.

Temperature is only part of the match

Record heat-source temperature, flow, duration, variability and contamination constraints. Do the same for the receiving duty. Include pipework losses, pumping, exchanger approach, cleaning access and bypass. A warm discharge and a cold feed are not enough to establish a workable connection. The useful boundary includes the displaced heating or cooling service, so recovery is not credited twice and any extra cooling requirement remains visible.

The timing can decide the return

A source available after a campaign ends may not coincide with the heat demand assumed in a sales estimate. Storage can help but introduces cost, losses and space. A source containing difficult residues may require isolation or a more maintainable exchanger. For pharmaceutical equipment, integration should be assessed with the relevant contamination and qualification requirements. The attractive option is the one that remains useful under realistic operations, not the largest heat number on a diagram.

A proposed matching study

Begin with time-aligned utility records, temperatures, flow estimates, schedules and current heating tariffs. Distinguish measured values from engineering estimates and identify the metering that would most change the decision. Build a source-to-sink comparison for normal, low-utilisation and maintenance conditions. The output would be a shortlist, a transparent calculation workbook and the next engineering questions. Physical installation or control changes would require a separately approved specialist design and implementation scope.

Report useful heat and financial value

State heat actually available for the receiving duty and the fuel or electricity it could displace under each scenario. Compare capital, maintenance, pumping and disruption against that value. Use dated, appropriate emission factors for any estimated carbon effect. Recovered heat is not automatically revenue, and thermal energy should not be treated as equivalent to electrical energy. An investor should see how many operating hours are needed and what happens if production moves to another campaign.

Know when a simpler measure wins

Stop if the source and sink rarely coincide, contamination isolation remains unresolved or the recovery connection threatens a critical temperature duty. Insulation, scheduling or control correction may deserve priority over capital equipment. A bounded paid thermal-matching study should document that conclusion when it is the better answer. The purpose is an investment choice supported by evidence, rather than a heat-recovery installation sold before the site need is understood.

The brief for the next investment decision

The proposed investment brief would connect each source to a receiving duty on a time-aligned schedule, making unused heat visible rather than counting it as a benefit. Engineering would own the temperature and integration assumptions; production would confirm when the source and sink operate; finance would review tariffs and maintenance costs. The next measurement should target the uncertainty most likely to change the recommendation. A small dependable connection could then be distinguished from a larger project whose financial case relies on simultaneous operation that the site cannot reasonably expect.
