The resource decision | A question to investigate
Find the capacity before committing the capital
A production expansion can appear to require more equipment when the constraint is waiting, changeover, yield loss or an unreliable upstream step. Resource Economics asks where usable capacity is actually limited, and whether a focused process investment could answer the commercial need before a larger purchase is made.

The decision for a site leader
A manufacturer may face a growing order book, a delayed transfer or uncertain demand. Finance wants to avoid underused assets, while operations needs enough dependable output to meet commitments. A proposed NEUVIOR study would investigate one equipment train and a defined demand scenario. It would compare justified capital expansion with targeted operational or process improvements, without assuming that every delay can be removed or that released time automatically creates sales.
Measure accepted output through the train
Map processing, waiting, cleaning, maintenance, sampling, release and transfer between operations. Keep equipment occupancy separate from active production time. Identify the step that limits the complete train under each product mix, rather than the machine with the most visible queue. Include rejected or repeated work. The boundary should reach usable, accepted output, so a faster individual operation does not receive credit when the next stage cannot absorb it.
An apparent bottleneck can move
A shorter cleaning cycle may expose a drying constraint. Larger batches may create longer holds or additional testing. More campaigns can increase changeover demand and working capital. The proposed comparison would retain these dependencies and test realistic schedules, not optimise each operation independently. Product quality, equipment suitability and the responsible site's change controls remain constraints, rather than variables adjusted to make the model produce an attractive result.
A proposed capacity diagnostic
Request batch timestamps, equipment logs, planned and unplanned downtime, yield history, cleaning records and demand scenarios. Validate the meaning of each timestamp before treating it as an operating duration. The proposed outputs are a constraint map, a reconciled capacity model and a ranked set of evidence-led options. A later improvement trial would need site approval and defined acceptance criteria. This first study would not establish that an untested process change is production-ready.
Buying the machine is not the first answer.
A useful capacity comparison follows accepted output through the whole train. Increasing one step can move a constraint rather than remove it.
The proposed diagnostic should compare equipment investment with maintenance, scheduling, operating changes and external capacity, using the same required outcome. No capacity increase is represented here as achieved.

Where does the
improvement end?
A material can leave one ledger and enter another. Expand the view to see what a manufacturing decision still needs to account for.
What is needed to make the same accepted product?
A smaller input is only the beginning.
- Included
- Fresh materials, water, the transformation and accepted product output.
- Still unresolved
- Recovery energy, treatment, cleaning and upstream production are outside this first view.
- The decision
- Use this view to locate a material-intensive step. It cannot establish a whole-process environmental advantage.
- Evidence to bring
- Batch-linked charges, accepted output and a consistent product specification.

Compare capital with useful alternatives
The economic case should include equipment, enabling work, qualification, training, maintenance and inventory consequences. For an operational option, include implementation effort and the risk of performance not persisting. Environmental indicators might include utility and material demand per accepted output, but capacity improvement alone does not prove an environmental benefit. Show low-demand and delayed-growth scenarios so an investor can see how quickly an attractive expansion could become underutilised.
When doing less is the stronger investment
Stop a capital recommendation if the demand case is unsupported, the constraint is not established or necessary quality and enabling costs are absent. If measurement cannot distinguish avoidable waiting from required hold time, resolve that first. A bounded paid diagnostic can create value by recommending a smaller intervention or a justified delay. The purpose is a clear capacity decision that protects delivery and capital, rather than an assumption that a larger plant is progress.

The proposed decision brief would show the constraint under each demand and product-mix scenario, including where it moves after an improvement. Operations would own the schedule assumptions, quality would identify necessary holds and finance would review the demand evidence. The next intervention would have an agreed measure of accepted output and an observation period appropriate to the production pattern. A capital request could then distinguish additional dependable capacity from theoretical time released at one machine. That makes a smaller process study commercially meaningful before a substantially larger equipment commitment is approved.

Another useful angle.
- Find the use for the heat before buying the exchanger
Waste heat has value when a real demand can use it at the right temperature and time.
- Dry only as far as the product requires
A drying step can hold valuable equipment while the team waits for confidence in the product.
- A better solvent must improve the whole process
Changing a solvent can change far more than the label on a drum.
