The resource decision | A question to investigate
Dry only as far as the product requires
A drying step can hold valuable equipment while the team waits for confidence in the product. The opportunity is to understand the relationship between time, energy, residuals and a reliable endpoint. A useful study asks whether the current operating pattern is justified, and what evidence could support a better one.

A bottleneck with several owners
A production lead may see a vessel occupied beyond the expected cycle, while quality needs a product meeting its agreed specification. Process scientists may suspect differences in wet-cake properties, loading or equipment behaviour. A proposed NEUVIOR drying diagnostic would focus on one product and dryer configuration. The aim would be to reveal where variation comes from before recommending a shorter cycle or a change in temperature that could damage product attributes.
Follow the material into and out of the dryer
The boundary starts with the incoming wet material and ends with accepted dry output, including any further drying, rejected material and solvent recovery. Record loading, solvent composition, moisture, vacuum, temperature, agitation and sampling. Upstream filtration may determine drying demand, so the comparison should capture those conditions. A lower energy figure achieved with a lighter or drier charge is not evidence of improved drying at equivalent duty.
Time is not the only endpoint
Residual solvents, water content and product properties can place different constraints on the operation. Faster drying may create unevenness, degradation or an unsuitable physical form. A longer cycle can also conceal an uncertain sampling strategy rather than a necessary process requirement. Our proposed comparison would distinguish process hypotheses from established quality requirements, using the existing acceptance criteria and qualified specialists to identify the most useful evidence.

Where does the
improvement end?
A material can leave one ledger and enter another. Expand the view to see what a manufacturing decision still needs to account for.
What is needed to make the same accepted product?
A smaller input is only the beginning.
- Included
- Fresh materials, water, the transformation and accepted product output.
- Still unresolved
- Recovery energy, treatment, cleaning and upstream production are outside this first view.
- The decision
- Use this view to locate a material-intensive step. It cannot establish a whole-process environmental advantage.
- Evidence to bring
- Batch-linked charges, accepted output and a consistent product specification.
Boundary context: ACS (2014) and EMA (2026). Study framing is NEUVIOR’s proposed approach.
Design a diagnostic before a trial
Review batch histories, analytical results, equipment trends, deviations and actual energy measurements where available. Compare like-for-like charges and identify the factors associated with repeated drying or long waiting periods. A subsequent trial would require an approved design and an appropriate analytical approach. The proposed first output is a variation map, a clearly defined comparator and a prioritised experiment plan, with no claim that desk analysis has validated a new endpoint.
Capacity has to be usable
Report energy per accepted mass, solvent emissions or recovered mass where measured, and dryer occupancy. Convert released time into financial value only when another valuable activity can use the capacity. Keep avoided operating costs separate from possible revenue. Carbon estimates should state factors and include changed utility demand. A capital alternative, such as a larger dryer, should be compared with process understanding and scheduling options rather than treated as the default answer.
A result that can say no
Stop if the proposed endpoint cannot consistently meet the required specification, analytical uncertainty overwhelms the apparent difference or changes introduce unresolved product risks. If records do not capture actual drying conditions, the first useful investment may be measurement. A bounded paid study can help a manufacturer decide whether to investigate a cycle adjustment, improve the upstream separation or retain the current process with stronger evidence for why it is necessary.

What process, recovered-material and impurity controls belong in a resource proposal?
Document retrievedA campaign comparison, not the shortest run
A sample drying brief would place comparable accepted batches beside their incoming wet-cake condition, charge, dryer occupancy, measured utility use and any repeated drying. It would show which observations are missing before suggesting an explanation. If shorter cycles coincide with drier incoming material, that relationship would direct attention upstream rather than be sold as a dryer improvement. The useful customer output is a choice between improving incoming-material control, testing an endpoint measurement or investigating an operating change.
Return when a product or campaign creates the question
A production and quality team could revisit the comparison at a campaign review, after recurring long cycles or before a proposed capacity investment. The buyer would provide permitted batch and analytical records, equipment trends and an accountable process scientist; quality would confirm the applicable acceptance requirements. Acceptance would require like-for-like accepted output, measured or explicitly missing utility evidence, and a justified next experiment. An ongoing commission would need recurring product or campaign decisions, rather than a promise that every periodic review finds further savings.
The brief for the next investment decision
The proposed decision brief would identify whether the next useful step is better incoming-material control, clearer endpoint measurement or a candidate cycle adjustment. Process development would own the scientific hypothesis, quality would confirm the required product attributes and operations would assess practical sampling and equipment access. A later trial should record accepted output and repeated work, not only the shortest successful run. The customer would receive a clear explanation of which uncertainty limits the decision and what result would justify further development, helping avoid investment in faster equipment before the underlying variation is understood.

Another useful angle.
- Find the capacity before committing the capital
A production expansion can appear to require more equipment when the constraint is waiting, changeover, yield loss or an unreliable upstream step.
- Measure the uncertainty that could change the investment
A resource dashboard can be visually convincing while telling a manufacturer little about what to do next.
- A better solvent must improve the whole process
Changing a solvent can change far more than the label on a drum.
