The resource decision | A question to investigate
Electrify the duty that can carry the change
Replacing a heat source is a production decision as well as an energy decision. The right starting point is a defined temperature duty, a realistic electricity supply and a credible operating plan. A focused comparison can show where electrification deserves capital, where it needs more evidence and where another measure should come first.

The buyer has more than one bill
An energy manager may face an emissions objective while a production director faces temperature, uptime and schedule constraints. Finance must judge tariffs, connection costs and asset life. A proposed Resource Economics study would investigate one suitable process or utility duty rather than promise complete site electrification. Engineering specialists would assess the equipment and integration. NEUVIOR's proposed role is to organise the decision, boundary and evidence needed to compare options coherently.
Specify the useful service
Define supply and return temperatures, peak load, minimum load, duty hours and acceptable interruption. Include any steam quality requirement and the difference between process heat and space heating. Electricity capacity, demand charges and backup supply belong in the boundary. Compare the current system, efficiency improvements and plausible electric alternatives against the same useful service. A nameplate efficiency quoted under another temperature condition should not silently become the expected site performance.
Efficiency and carbon can diverge
An efficient electric system may still have an unattractive operating cost under the relevant tariff. A favourable carbon estimate may depend on electricity assumptions that differ from the site's actual reporting method. For industrial heat pumps, the IEA describes how performance depends on temperature lift and configuration (IEA, 2022). Our comparison would cost direct electric alternatives separately rather than assume the same operating case. The study should retain these distinctions and test changing load, energy prices and supply constraints without presenting a single scenario as a forecast.

Where does the
improvement end?
A material can leave one ledger and enter another. Expand the view to see what a manufacturing decision still needs to account for.
What is needed to make the same accepted product?
A smaller input is only the beginning.
- Included
- Fresh materials, water, the transformation and accepted product output.
- Still unresolved
- Recovery energy, treatment, cleaning and upstream production are outside this first view.
- The decision
- Use this view to locate a material-intensive step. It cannot establish a whole-process environmental advantage.
- Evidence to bring
- Batch-linked charges, accepted output and a consistent product specification.
Boundary context: ACS (2014) and EMA (2026). Study framing is NEUVIOR’s proposed approach.
A bounded options assessment
Request interval energy data, process duty information, boiler or heater records, supply agreements, connection constraints and maintenance history. Identify which loads can be examined without altering a critical process. The proposed output is a duty-specific option model, a grid and integration question list, and a staged investigation plan. Vendor proposals would be normalised to the same assumptions. An authorised pilot, if justified, would need a separate protocol and responsible engineering and quality owners.
Make the capital committee’s question answerable
Separate upfront equipment, enabling electrical work, operating energy, maintenance, downtime and residual asset value. Show emissions estimates with factor year and boundary, and keep local air-quality considerations separate. State whether an apparent financial benefit depends on a grant or an unconfirmed future tariff. The useful investment result is a range with visible decision thresholds: which price, utilisation or temperature change would make another option preferable?
Stop before a stranded asset
Do not proceed if the supply connection cannot support the duty, backup assumptions are uncosted or performance relies on an incompatible temperature profile. If the site has not yet reduced avoidable demand, compare that first. A paid diagnostic should leave a defensible shortlist and a reason to invest in further engineering, or a reason to defer. It is not a commitment to purchase equipment or a guarantee of savings.

The proposed decision brief would show the operating conditions under which each option remains technically suitable and financially plausible. The electrical owner would confirm connection and protection requirements, production would agree the useful duty and engineering would assess backup operation. Finance would test the tariff assumptions without treating future prices as known. A candidate pilot would have a defined duty and a way to compare delivered heat, reliability and cost with the baseline. The capital request would then concern an evidenced application rather than a general preference for a technology.

Bring us the decision you need to make
A useful first discussion starts with one process, one accountable owner and the choice that needs evidence. Share the decision deadline, the information already available and what a credible result would allow your team to do next.
Another useful angle.
- Ask suppliers for evidence that can change a decision
A supplier's environmental statement is useful when it relates to the material, location and process being purchased.
- Measure the uncertainty that could change the investment
A resource dashboard can be visually convincing while telling a manufacturer little about what to do next.
- Solvent recovery that earns its return
A solvent leaving a process can be an expense, a useful material or a difficult mixture.
