The resource decision | A question to investigate
What is worth recovering from the mother liquor?
After crystallisation, value can remain in a stream that is costly to handle. Recovering more material may be possible, but so may concentrating impurities, adding solvent or occupying equipment for little return. The worthwhile decision concerns acceptable product and total process value, rather than the largest recovery number.

A yield question with a quality boundary
An operations director sees a potential yield gain; a process scientist sees solubility and impurity behaviour; quality sees the consequences of introducing recovered material. A proposed Resource Economics study would examine one mother-liquor stream and a specified recovery destination. It would compare recovery with leaving the current process unchanged and with an upstream improvement. The intent is to find a justified next experiment, not encourage indiscriminate reintroduction of retained material.
Include every return path
Map the initial crystallisation, retained liquor, recovery operation, any purge, secondary product and final waste. Identify whether recovered material returns to the same stage, an earlier stage or another destination. Track solvent and impurity accumulation over the intended sequence. A single-pass yield calculation cannot establish a stable repeated process. The boundary should report accepted product after all required purification, with the same specification applied to the baseline and candidate.
More isolation may bring more burden
Additional concentration can use energy and generate a difficult residue. A second crop may need further purification or have different physical characteristics. Storage and campaign timing may constrain whether recovery is practical. The proposed comparison would separate these mechanisms, using a material balance to identify where the potential value actually lies. Recovery that only moves a quality problem into the next batch should fail the screen even if the accounting yield rises.

Where does the
improvement end?
A material can leave one ledger and enter another. Expand the view to see what a manufacturing decision still needs to account for.
What is needed to make the same accepted product?
A smaller input is only the beginning.
- Included
- Fresh materials, water, the transformation and accepted product output.
- Still unresolved
- Recovery energy, treatment, cleaning and upstream production are outside this first view.
- The decision
- Use this view to locate a material-intensive step. It cannot establish a whole-process environmental advantage.
- Evidence to bring
- Batch-linked charges, accepted output and a consistent product specification.
Boundary context: ACS (2014) and EMA (2026). Study framing is NEUVIOR’s proposed approach.
A proposed evidence package
Request batch-linked composition, assay, relevant impurity results, solvent charges, isolation yield and waste data. Include records of variable batches rather than only an ideal development run. Qualified process and quality partners would define any recovery experiment and its analytical acceptance criteria. The first output would show the plausible recoverable range, the evidence needed for repeated use and the alternatives worth comparing. Any resulting change would require the site's own control and regulatory assessment.
Distinguish product from theoretical value
The commercial model should value accepted product, deduct additional processing and testing, and include equipment occupancy. Environmental reporting should account for extra solvent, energy and final purge rather than count retained material alone. Sensitivity to product demand matters: recovered output with no useful destination may increase inventory rather than value. A range tied to observed variation is more useful to a capital committee than a single assumed recovery percentage.
Stop where the process cannot support the loop
Stop if impurity control remains unresolved, recovered material requires disproportionate purification or the proposed loop cannot be documented reliably. If an upstream crystallisation adjustment offers a simpler route to equivalent yield, investigate that alternative. A bounded paid study should finish with a clear recommendation and conditions for further work. It may establish that the material is worth studying; it cannot establish routine manufacturing suitability without the necessary product-specific evidence.

What process, recovered-material and impurity controls belong in a resource proposal?
Document retrievedThe brief for the next investment decision
The proposed decision brief would show where recovered material re-enters the process and what leaves through the purge. Process development would own impurity and solubility questions, quality would specify intended-use criteria and operations would confirm storage and campaign constraints. Finance would value only output with an accepted specification and a plausible commercial destination. Before an experiment, the team would agree the maximum investigation needed to distinguish recovery from a simpler upstream adjustment. That creates a reason to fund a focused study while keeping routine manufacturing introduction as a separate decision.

Bring us the decision you need to make
A useful first discussion starts with one process, one accountable owner and the choice that needs evidence. Share the decision deadline, the information already available and what a credible result would allow your team to do next.
Another useful angle.
- Ask suppliers for evidence that can change a decision
A supplier's environmental statement is useful when it relates to the material, location and process being purchased.
- Keep a useful stream from becoming a difficult mixture
Once process streams are mixed, information and recovery options can disappear with them.
- Measure the uncertainty that could change the investment
A resource dashboard can be visually convincing while telling a manufacturer little about what to do next.
