The resource decision | A question to investigate
Follow the catalyst beyond the reaction
A catalyst may look efficient in the reaction scheme while leaving a difficult separation, contamination question or supply exposure. The commercial opportunity is to compare the full use-and-recovery pathway, including the amount that can genuinely return to service. Resource Economics asks when recovery is a defensible choice rather than an attractive assumption.

The value is not only in the metal
A process-development team may want lower catalyst consumption. Procurement may care about availability and price volatility, while quality needs control of residues and impurities. A proposed NEUVIOR study would focus on a named catalytic step and a realistic recovery destination. Specialist chemistry and analytical input would be essential. The first question is whether retaining or recovering the material can support the same product requirement and dependable manufacturing operation.
Define what recovery means
Separate catalyst reused directly, material sent for external refining and material lost to waste. Follow solvents, scavengers, supports, filter aids and any additional purification introduced by the recovery route. The boundary must include the accepted product, because more catalyst recovery is not useful if product losses rise substantially. A payment from a refiner is a commercial recovery outcome; it is not proof that the same catalyst returns to the original process.
A recovered material can behave differently
Activity, selectivity, contamination and physical handling may change over successive uses. A high apparent recovery fraction can hide declining performance or accumulating impurities. The proposed comparison would retain the current process as a baseline and consider reduction at source, direct reuse and external reclamation as different options. A generic circularity score would miss these distinctions. The scientific question is how the candidate pathway behaves under the conditions that matter to the product.

Where does the
improvement end?
A material can leave one ledger and enter another. Expand the view to see what a manufacturing decision still needs to account for.
What is needed to make the same accepted product?
A smaller input is only the beginning.
- Included
- Fresh materials, water, the transformation and accepted product output.
- Still unresolved
- Recovery energy, treatment, cleaning and upstream production are outside this first view.
- The decision
- Use this view to locate a material-intensive step. It cannot establish a whole-process environmental advantage.
- Evidence to bring
- Batch-linked charges, accepted output and a consistent product specification.
Boundary context: ACS (2014) and EMA (2026). Study framing is NEUVIOR’s proposed approach.
What a bounded study would request
Collect catalyst specifications, charges, product and waste analyses, purification steps, supplier terms and documented recovery arrangements. Reconcile where the relevant material goes and identify uncertain streams. Qualified partners could then propose appropriate recovery or reuse experiments, with defined cycle limits and acceptance criteria. The first decision output would be a material ledger, an options comparison and a targeted analytical plan, rather than an assertion of a qualified recycling process.
Cost and environmental burden need separate evidence
Economic indicators should include purchase cost, recovery charges, additional consumables, testing and product losses. Environmental indicators may include material intensity, waste destination and additional energy, with upstream estimates labelled clearly. Scarcity and supply resilience are relevant but should not be converted into an invented emissions factor. The capital case should show whether the option remains worthwhile when the commodity price changes or recovery yields are lower than expected.
Conditions for a sensible stop
Stop if recovered material cannot meet its intended requirements, repeated use causes unacceptable performance drift or analytical evidence cannot control carryover. Reject a model that assumes every collected gram displaces new material. A paid feasibility comparison can identify whether the best next step is an experiment, a procurement change or no recovery investment at all. Demonstrated product-specific results would require subsequent authorised work, not the presence of this programme page.

Document retrievedThe brief for the next investment decision
The proposed decision brief would specify the recovery destination, the material that can be credited and the evidence needed over successive cycles. Chemistry specialists would own performance and carryover questions, quality would define intended-use criteria and procurement would verify the value of external reclamation. Finance would compare the downside case as well as favourable commodity prices. A later trial should demonstrate useful recovery under agreed conditions, including any added purification. That gives a customer a practical development threshold instead of a circularity claim based on material collected before its suitability is known.

Bring us the decision you need to make
A useful first discussion starts with one process, one accountable owner and the choice that needs evidence. Share the decision deadline, the information already available and what a credible result would allow your team to do next.
Another useful angle.
- Solvent recovery that earns its return
A solvent leaving a process can be an expense, a useful material or a difficult mixture.
- Keep a useful stream from becoming a difficult mixture
Once process streams are mixed, information and recovery options can disappear with them.
- Measure the uncertainty that could change the investment
A resource dashboard can be visually convincing while telling a manufacturer little about what to do next.
