The resource decision | A question to investigate
Make purification earn its material demand
Purification can turn a promising chemistry into an impractical manufacturing process. The valuable comparison asks how each option reaches the required product quality, with realistic recovery, solvent demand and operating effort. Resource Economics brings the separation and the commercial decision into the same view.

The decision belongs early
A development team may have a workable chromatographic method but need to understand whether it can support a manufacturing programme. A contract manufacturer needs a realistic equipment and campaign plan. Finance needs to see purification cost before assuming an attractive reaction yield becomes a viable product. A proposed NEUVIOR screen would examine a defined impurity problem and compare suitable separations, working with experienced process-development partners rather than prescribing one universal method.
Compare accepted output, not feed processed
Define the feed composition, target purity, recovery requirement and practical scale. Include conditioning, loading, washing, elution, regeneration, concentration and drying where relevant. Track stationary phase, filter aids, solvent swaps and discarded fractions. Compare alternatives at the same accepted output and required quality. A large amount of material passing through equipment is not evidence of useful throughput if substantial product is lost or requires another purification cycle.
The strongest separation may not be the best route
A selective chromatography step can have a substantial solvent and equipment burden; an attractive crystallisation may struggle with variable impurities or physical form. Membrane and extraction options introduce their own compatibility and selectivity questions. A proposed study would ask whether upstream chemistry can reduce the purification challenge before increasing separation complexity. The objective is a workable route, not the defence of the first method that succeeded in the laboratory.

Where does the
improvement end?
A material can leave one ledger and enter another. Expand the view to see what a manufacturing decision still needs to account for.
What is needed to make the same accepted product?
A smaller input is only the beginning.
- Included
- Fresh materials, water, the transformation and accepted product output.
- Still unresolved
- Recovery energy, treatment, cleaning and upstream production are outside this first view.
- The decision
- Use this view to locate a material-intensive step. It cannot establish a whole-process environmental advantage.
- Evidence to bring
- Batch-linked charges, accepted output and a consistent product specification.
Boundary context: ACS (2014) and EMA (2026). Study framing is NEUVIOR’s proposed approach.
A bounded comparative study
Start with impurity profiles, feed variability, analytical methods, material charges, fraction yields and equipment constraints. Establish which candidate options have enough technical basis to merit an experiment. Qualified partners would agree the trial design and acceptance criteria. The proposed output would be a separation map, a comparable mass ledger and a development recommendation, with uncertainty carried into the economics. No unperformed experiment would be represented as proof of purity or recovery.
See the cost of reaching specification
Report cost and material input per accepted mass, processing time, consumable life and the effect of repeated processing. State energy estimates separately from solvent mass. Environmental comparisons should make the upstream and downstream boundary explicit; a low input figure for one operation is not a full process assessment. An investment discussion should identify the scale or product demand at which a different separation becomes commercially preferable.
Do not scale an unresolved problem
Stop if candidate performance depends on an unrepresentative feed, impurity measurement is inadequate or a method cannot reach the required product attributes. Where no separation is attractive, the correct next step may be route redesign. A paid options screen should identify that early and preserve the reasoning for the customer. It creates a focused development decision rather than an inflated claim that every purification difficulty has a ready industrial solution.

The proposed decision brief would identify the separation that deserves an experiment and the impurity or physical property that experiment must resolve. Process development would own feed and analytical assumptions, manufacturing would assess equipment availability and quality would confirm the attributes that define accepted product. The commercial owner would supply a realistic demand range. The recommendation would include a scale-sensitive comparison and the reason alternatives were excluded, so a customer can commission the next piece of development with a clear question rather than expand a laboratory method simply because it already exists.

Bring us the decision you need to make
A useful first discussion starts with one process, one accountable owner and the choice that needs evidence. Share the decision deadline, the information already available and what a credible result would allow your team to do next.
Another useful angle.
- Ask suppliers for evidence that can change a decision
A supplier's environmental statement is useful when it relates to the material, location and process being purchased.
- Solvent recovery that earns its return
A solvent leaving a process can be an expense, a useful material or a difficult mixture.
- Keep a useful stream from becoming a difficult mixture
Once process streams are mixed, information and recovery options can disappear with them.
